For a misdemeanor, your case could be heard by one of two judges in First Parish Court in Metairie, one of two judges in Second Parish Court in Gretna or Gretna or Kenner City Courts. For a felony, your case will be heard in Gretna.
First and Second Parish Courts each have two judges who hear misdemeanor cases. Jefferson has a Criminal Commissioner who will set your bond. For felonies, once your bond has been set, and you’ve been arraigned, your case will be assigned permanently to one of sixteen District Court Judges in Gretna.
You want a divorce, custody, visitation, child or spousal support, to divide community property, protection from abuse, name change, to adopt, to interdict an impaired relative, or have been served. First, custody, child and spousal support cases will go to one of three Hearing Officers in Gretna. Then if either party objects to those recommendations, or if domestic abuse has been alleged, the case will go to the Domestic Commissioner in Gretna, and finally if either party objects, will go to one of sixteen District Court Judges for hearing in Gretna.
Child Protective Services (CPS) has been called about your children, niece or nephew, or grandchildren, or you have been served with a state Non-Support case. For state Non-Support cases, you will go to one of two Hearing Officers in Harvey and if either party objects, to one of four Juvenile Court Judges in Harvey. For CPS cases you will see one of four Juvenile Court Judges in Harvey.
You or your loved one was injured or killed when rear-ended, “T-boned” or hit head on by a car or truck, treated by a negligent doctor, or bitten by a dog. Your case may be filed with one of two judges in First Parish Court in Metairie, if it arose on the East Bank, one of two judges in Second Parish Court in Gretna, if it arose on the West Bank up to $20,000, or one of sixteen District Court Judges in Gretna. If your damages exceed $50,000, we can ask for a jury.
Jefferson cases are appealed to the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeal in Gretna. If you received an unfavorable judgment with another attorney, your case can be appealed, quickly.
